Major League Baseball action on Thursday evening and the Toronto Blue Jays will grapple with the Atlanta Braves at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, Georgia in game four of their four-game series. Games one and two of this series were at Toronto and games three and four are here in Atlanta. Pitching Probables: Marcus Stroman vs Julio Teheran. The Blue Jays have been listed as -115 favorites, while the Braves are at +105. The Total has been set at 8.
The Toronto Blue Jays have been the worst team in the American League East all year so far, but they looked as if they were starting to turn things around as they had won their five games prior to this series. Well, that is overall as they have now lost all three games against the Braves so far and they have allowed 27 runs in the three games, after allowing just 13 total runs over their five game win streak. The Blue Jays are now 20th in the league in ERA at 4.32. The real problem this year has been their offense, which is 25th in the league, putting up just 4.05 rpg so far, after ranking 9th in the league in scoring last year, putting up 4.68 rpg. It really appears that they miss Edwin Encarnacion, who is now in Cleveland, but they are also currently without Troy Tulowitzki, Josh Donaldson and Russell Martin. This is a team in a lot of trouble. Getting the nod for the Jays in this one will be Marcus Stroman, who is 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA on the year, including 2-0 with a 3.44 ERA in three starts on the road. Stroman is 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 11 games (eight starts) in interleague play in his career, but this is his first meeting with the Braves.
The Atlanta Braves have not had a great start to their year, but they have won the first three games in this series. They are now in 2nd place in the National League East, but are still five games under .500 and 8.0 games out of first. No one in that division will catch the Nationals. The Braves have been decent offensive team overall and they have averaged 4.57 rpg here at home, but the problem has been their pitching, especially here at home, where they have a 5.50 ERA and have allowed 6.07 rpg so far. This new SunTrust Park has been a very good hitters park so far as 10.64 rpg have been scored here this year, which is 5th in the league. The first three games of this series put up 14.00 rpg. Toeing the rubber for the Braves in this one will be Julio Teheran, who has gone 3-3 with a 4.08 ERA in eight starts so far, including 1-3 with an 8.14 ERA in four starts here at home. At Turner Field in his career he was 24-16 with a 3.02 ERA in 70 games (68 starts). Teheran has gone 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA in 14 career interleague starts, while against the Jays in his career he is 0-3 with a 6.60 ERA.
Both of these starters have been solid in their career overall, but they have struggled some this year. Marcus Stroman gets the edge in this game as he has a 2.18 ERA in interleague play in his career, while Julio Teheran has a 6.60 ERA in his three career starts against the jays and he is 1-3 with an 8.14 ERA in four starts here at home, compared to 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in four starts on the road so far. The Jays also will be looking to avoid the sweep in this series and that should give them a motivational edge as well. Take the Jays in this one.
